Adequate Fluid Consumption for Babies in All Seasons
For babies, consuming enough water in all seasons, not just in summer, is of great importance for strengthening the immune system. Nutrition and Diet Specialist, Breastfeeding Consultant of ebebek Seray Tekin states that in addition to water consumption in all seasons, fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content should be emphasized in the diet for babies to grow healthy and have a strong immunity. Tekin said, “During the first 6 months, breast milk meets all the water needs of the baby. In the process of transition to supplementary food, it is ideal to give water to babies with acclimatization cups.”
Breast Milk Supports Babies’ Immunity
Seray Tekin emphasizes that especially breastfeeding mothers consuming plenty of water in all seasons and breastfeeding their babies frequently play an important role in strengthening the immunity of babies. Stating that breast milk creates a protective shield for babies against diseases, Tekin underlines that babies should only be fed with breast milk for the first 6 months.
Prefer Water with Low Sodium, High Calcium Content
Stating that babies can meet water after the six-month period, Tekin says that the water to be given to babies should contain low sodium and high calcium. “Babies’ kidneys cannot tolerate too much sodium. Calcium-rich water contributes to bone health; the ideal calcium content should not exceed 100 mg/L. It is also recommended that the pH level of the water should be in the range of 7.5 – 8.5 and that it should be cooled after boiling.”
Support with Fresh and Seasonal Foods
After the sixth month, fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content should be included frequently in the baby’s diet. Tekin also states that fluid intake can be supported with healthy drinks such as sugar-free compote and kefir, adding that food should be freshly prepared and consumed immediately.
